- Plan and prepare for shunting operation
- Personal protective clothing and equipment is selected and used
- Health and safety hazards/maintenance requirements are identified and reported to appropriate personnel according to workplace reporting procedures
- Shunting requirements are interpreted from the marshalling strategy
- Vehicles and equipment are located and prepared in accordance with marshalling strategy
- Rolling stock movements, availability and locations are established in order to determine appropriate siding and/or track locations for vehicle placement
- Carry out shunting control procedures
- Points, levers, switches, signals and line of sight communications are used to assist the control of rolling stock movement
- Hand, light and radio shunting commands conform with operational and statutory requirements
- Consignment notes/tickets are checked and bins are located and sorted to comply with marshalling requirements
- Coupling and uncoupling procedures are carried out to attach and detach rolling stock
